This experience gave the Flex Power Control team a unique perspective on how EVs will impact the electric grid. Especially how much power will be required from EVs for the home, as well as the new opportunity the large EV batteries provided. The founders saw the need for bidirectional charging systems and home energy management, and how it could create new value for customers. As a result, the SPIN product concept was born: one set of power electronics that can manage all of DC the loads in home. This approach enables the flexibility to solar, battery, EV charging and any other new DC technologies such as fuel cells, hot water heating and lighting to be added.
Flex Power Control was formed in 2015 and has been developing the core technology with R&D funding and support from the Department of Energy, California Energy Commission and the Electric Power Research Institute. The product development leverages the team’s extensive industry experience for both charging system development and automotive supply chain benefits to provide superior reliability and cost.
